EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
The Northwest Territories Floatplane Association/COPA 108 organizes and hosts several social and educational events in Yellowknife each year. NWTFA/COPA 108 also sponsors a fly-out picnic or other aviation activity and organizes the bush pilot memorial fly-by during the biennial Midnight Sun Fly In.
Annual rust removers
The Northwest Territories Floatplane Association/COPA Flight 108 conducts an annual Rust Remover each spring to assist members in meeting their requirements for recurrent pilot training pursuant to CAR 421.05(2)(c). Topics covered in past sessions have included aviation weather, flight planning and navigation, and aviation regulations. Our Rust Remover agendas have been approved by Transport Canada.
AGM and break-up party
The annual general meeting of the Northwest Territories Floatplane Association is typically held in late May. In order to celebrate break-up and kick off the float season, the AGM is combined with a BBQ and pot luck. In recent years, this event has been held at Fred Henne Park, allowing members to enjoy early summer weather while watching the last bits of ice float in Long Lake.
freeze-up party and chili cook-off
After the conclusion of each float season, the Northwest Territories Floatplane Association hosts a freeze-up party and chili cook-off. Members are invited to contribute their best chili, trade stories of the past float season, and compete to win the coveted "chili cup".
COPA FOR KIDS
The Northwest Territories Floatplane Association, as COPA Flight 108, has been proud to participate in the COPA For Kids Aviation Program sponsored by the Canadian Owner and Pilots Association (COPA). Our COPA for Kids event was held in Yellowknife on an annual basis from 2009 through 2017*. All flights were in floatplanes owned and flown by local pilots. Each pilot introduces kids to the science and general mechanics of his plane and then treats them to a flight in the co-pilot's seat.
*Note: Our continued participation in the COPA for Kids program is currently under review due to the imposition of new regulatory requirements at the national level.
